Assessment, education and therapy to support healthy breathing, oral function, feeding and development across all stages of life — from newborns to adults.
Healthy Faces supports people across all stages of life to develop and maintain healthy breathing, oral function and development through evidence-informed assessment, education and therapy.
From the earliest days of life, oral function plays an important role in breastfeeding, feeding, speech development, sleep and facial growth.
We take a whole-person approach, considering the relationship between the mouth, face, airway, breathing, feeding and communication. Working collaboratively with families and other health professionals, we develop personalised strategies that support meaningful, functional change.
Following assessment, support may include one or more of the following pathways — often working alongside your speech pathologist, dentist, orthodontist, lactation consultant or GP.
Common concerns
Many everyday concerns can be connected with the way we breathe and how the muscles of the mouth and face are functioning.
You do not need to know exactly what is contributing to a concern — an assessment can help provide clarity and guide next steps.
Breathing and orofacial function shape wellbeing at every age. Healthy Faces welcomes individuals and families at every stage of life.

Our approach
At Healthy Faces, we take a personalised, evidence-informed approach to understanding the relationship between breathing, oral function, feeding, speech and facial development. Every person is different. Rather than applying a one-size-fits-all approach, we begin by understanding each individual's history, concerns, functional patterns and goals. Through comprehensive assessment and education, we identify the factors that may be contributing to difficulties and work collaboratively to develop an appropriate pathway forward.
Breathing, oral function, feeding, sleep, speech and facial development are interconnected. We consider these systems together to understand how they may be influencing everyday function.
Education is an important part of change. We help individuals and families understand what is happening, why it matters and what strategies may support improved function.
Our therapy approaches are designed to support the development of healthier patterns through achievable, evidence-informed strategies that fit into everyday life.
Where appropriate, we work alongside other health professionals including dentists, orthodontists, ENT specialists, lactation consultants and allied health professionals to support coordinated care.
The pathway forward
Following assessment, support may include one or more of the following pathways — often working alongside your speech pathologist, dentist, orthodontist, lactation consultant or GP.
Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy
Orofacial myofunctional therapy (OMT), also known as orofacial myology, supports the development of efficient patterns of movement and coordination of the muscles of the face, mouth and jaw. Therapy may address areas such as tongue posture, lip function, chewing, swallowing, breathing patterns and oral habits that influence everyday activities including feeding, speech and oral function.
Orofacial myofunctional therapy is not a substitute for orthodontic, medical or dental assessment. Where concerns involve multiple factors, collaboration with relevant health professionals is recommended.

Breathing Retraining with BreathCoach
BreathCoach® is a practitioner training program founded on the Buteyko Institute Method, incorporating evidence-informed breathing retraining principles alongside contemporary approaches to breathing awareness and functional breathing patterns. Through personalised sessions, Healthy Faces supports individuals to understand their breathing patterns and develop practical strategies to encourage more efficient, comfortable breathing habits.
Sessions focus on developing awareness of breathing patterns and learning practical techniques that support more comfortable, efficient breathing in everyday life. Many people also notice improvements in relaxation, wellbeing and energy levels.
Ideal for individuals experiencing breathing pattern concerns (without complex medical conditions) who want to build awareness, resilience and better breath habits for daily life. This therapy is not a replacement for medical assessment or treatment of complex respiratory or sleep conditions.
Education & Guidance
Sometimes the first step is simply understanding what is happening. We provide education and guidance to help families make informed decisions about next steps, whether that involves therapy, collaboration with other professionals, or monitoring over time.
FAQ
Healthy Faces provides assessment, education and therapy to support healthy breathing, oral function, feeding and facial development across all stages of life.
We take a personalised approach to understanding the relationship between breathing, oral function, feeding, speech and everyday wellbeing. Following assessment, we help identify the most appropriate pathway forward — whether that involves therapy, education, collaboration with other professionals or monitoring over time.
Healthy Faces supports people across the lifespan — from newborns through to adults.
You may consider an assessment if you have concerns about breathing patterns, mouth breathing, oral habits, feeding, swallowing, tongue function, oral posture, speech sound development or how these factors may be influencing everyday function.
You do not need to know exactly what is contributing to a concern — an assessment can help provide clarity and guide next steps.
An assessment begins with understanding your concerns, history and goals.
Depending on your individual needs, assessment may include consideration of breathing patterns, oral posture, tongue and lip movement, swallowing patterns, feeding skills, speech and other aspects of oral function.
Following assessment, we will discuss our findings and provide recommendations for appropriate next steps.
No.
While tongue function and oral restrictions may be part of an individual’s story, Healthy Faces looks beyond one isolated factor.
We consider the broader picture of breathing, oral function, feeding, swallowing and development to understand what may be contributing to concerns and what support may be helpful.
No. Healthy Faces does not perform tongue tie procedures.
Where appropriate, we can provide assessment and support around oral function and collaborate with relevant health professionals involved in decision-making regarding oral restrictions.
Orofacial myofunctional therapy (OMT), also known as orofacial myology, supports the development of efficient movement patterns and coordination of the muscles involved in breathing, feeding, chewing, swallowing and speech.
Therapy is personalised and may include strategies to support oral posture, tongue function, breathing patterns and everyday oral skills.
Orofacial myofunctional therapy is not about isolated exercises alone — it focuses on helping individuals develop functional patterns that can be integrated into everyday activities.
No. Not everyone who has a concern related to breathing or oral function requires therapy.
Assessment helps determine whether therapy is appropriate and what type of support may be most beneficial.
In some cases, education, monitoring or collaboration with other professionals may be the most appropriate pathway.
BreathCoach® breathing training is a structured approach that supports individuals to develop awareness of their breathing patterns and learn strategies to promote more comfortable and efficient breathing habits.
The BreathCoach® program is founded on the Buteyko Institute Method, incorporating principles such as nasal breathing, breathing awareness and gentle breathing retraining techniques. The approach focuses on helping individuals recognise and modify unhelpful breathing patterns that may contribute to concerns such as mouth breathing, inefficient breathing habits or breathing-related discomfort.
Through personalised sessions, individuals learn practical strategies that can be incorporated into everyday life.
Breathing training is not a replacement for medical assessment or treatment of complex respiratory or sleep conditions. Where appropriate, Healthy Faces works collaboratively with relevant health professionals to support a coordinated approach.
No.
Healthy Faces works collaboratively alongside other health professionals. Breathing, oral function, feeding and facial development are complex areas that often benefit from a team approach.
Where appropriate, we communicate and collaborate with dentists, orthodontists, ENT specialists, lactation consultants, medical professionals and other allied health providers to support coordinated care.
Every person is different.
The duration and frequency of support depends on individual needs, goals, contributing factors and how consistently strategies can be incorporated into everyday life.
Assessment allows us to provide a clearer understanding of what may be involved for your individual situation.

About
Healthy Faces is led by Tania Innes, Speech Pathologist, IBCLC and co-founder of Start Smart Tasmania. For more than two decades, Tania has worked with individuals and families across Tasmania in the areas of speech, feeding and communication.
Over time, her clinical work highlighted the close relationship between breathing, oral function, feeding and overall development. This naturally led to further study in orofacial myofunctional therapy and breathing retraining, allowing Tania to bring together her experience in speech pathology, infant feeding and oral function into one integrated service.
Today, Healthy Faces combines that experience to provide assessment, education and therapy for individuals of all ages experiencing concerns related to breathing, oral function and oral development.
Tania has undertaken specialised training in orofacial myofunctional therapy. She is a Level 1 BreathCoach® certified instructor, trained through BreathCoach Education in a practitioner program founded on the Buteyko Institute Method. She works collaboratively with dentists, orthodontists, ENT specialists, lactation consultants, GPs and other allied health professionals, recognising that breathing, oral function and oral development often benefit from a coordinated approach.
Tania is known for taking the time to understand the whole picture, helping individuals and families make sense of complex concerns before developing practical, evidence-informed recommendations tailored to their individual needs.
